Started in 2008, Weaving Destination is one of the initiatives of NEDAN FOUNDATION, which supports the socio economic empowerment of women. While preserving traditional Bodo motifs, colors and weaving techniques, Weaving Destination attempts to design woven products to suit local, national and international markets. Who’s Empowerment? Weaving Destination is a social platform where women weave hand-woven eri silk and cotton products using traditional patterns. Products include eri silk scarves, runners, handicrafts, tops, cotton fabrics, and garments for individual and industrial use. The business preserves traditional Bodo motifs and weaving techniques, while also designing products to suit national and international markets. Using profits from product sales, Weaving Destination plans to operate a professional training center that will build capacity among indigenous young girls who are highly vulnerable to trafficking. The center also will facilitate access to antiretroviral treatment for HIV-positive women and children who live in remote villages of Bodoland. Through these activities, WD not only generates direct economic opportunities for its workers but also strives to support larger groups of women in need by fostering social empowerment and community awareness about women’s widespread vulnerabilities.
